Midterm Assignment

Q The Assignment Choose topics from one of our quizzes or response papers to do further research into the topics of understanding narrative raised by Porter Abbot, Scott McCloud, or Donald Braid. Feel free to start with your response to the assignment and then research the concept to develop an essay furthering your understanding of how we make meaning from a text (cognitive processing). For example, you might choose to challenge your understanding of narrative coherence, jamming, panel sequencing, or any of the other mechanisms we subconsciously make use of while reading. Choose three of our class readings representing a variety of times (century) and places (geography) that reflect of a variety of histories and cultures to illustrate your understanding and application of the concepts. The essay should be at least four pages (1200 words) in 12-point font and be in MLA format. A thorough paper will have more than three outside (library data-base) resources. Better papers will be well organized, have a clear and challenging thesis, include thorough analysis, and make use of an understandable English. Due Date The paper is due Mach 19. The midterm exam is a reading exam: know the stories, their settings, their primary characters and their conflicts. You will have 24 hours to complete it. If you are reading and annotating the stories, you shouldn't have any trouble. Grading Midterm essays must reflect the Student Learning Outcomes for ENGLT 300 (see syllabus), meet or exceed the word requirement, and include original critical thinking. Check your turnitin percentage to ensure your paper doesn't include more than 20% of quoted material and to make sure you have used quotation marks and cited your sources. You can submit your paper to the dropbox multiple times to check your turnitin results. I will evaluate the last version you submit.

Giving a narrative's meaning or meanings, in general, is to conceive about meaning in terms of concepts and judgements. Some individuals believe that a narrative is just a story, and a narrative is simply a narrative, just as a picture is simply a picture, and a song is simply a song. However, it is difficult to maintain this perspective since it is difficult not to notice the ideas that pop up all over the place over the course of a story.
